History of The Byerley Turk

The Byerley Turk is one of three Arab progenitors in the male line of every thoroughbred in the world (the other two being The Darley Arabian and the The Godolphin Barb). Held by his Arabian Groom, the famous sire stands in the estate of Colonel Byerley with a mare and foal in the background.

Foaled in 1680 and probably captured from the Turks in the Emperor Leopold's campaign in Hungary in 1687/7, he was later ridden by Colonel Byerley at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

John Wootton, one of the greatest of English horse painters, was patronised by The 3rd Duke of Beaufort and thus came to portray most of the finest horses of his lifetime at Newmarket.
