Although The K Club is known primarily as a golf resort and now is also becoming one of Europe’s most talked-about deluxe spa destinations, the pursuits that once were the mainstay of this historic estate still have a potent allure. Whatever the season, there is nothing to beat a day in the great outdoors in County Kildare.
Whether it’s just a simple walk or cycle in the magnificent grounds, testing your skills at archery or clay target shooting, riding out across country or simply enjoying the inner calm only angling can bring, The K Club offers sports to suit all tastes and skill levels. |

Fishing is available on a private and richly populated one-mile stretch of the River Liffey, which ambles lazily through The K Club estate before reaching Dublin. The charge of €55 for a half-day (three hours) on the riverbank includes equipment, bait, tackle and clothing. For an extra €45, guests may hire a ghillie to enhance the experience.
The river boasts great hatches of fly throughout the season, resulting in superb catches of fish, especially during the mayfly time of May through to July and afterwards on sedges. Occasionally, salmon are found – the best time to catch one is usually during autumn. Two of the lakes on the golf course are stocked with rainbow and brown trout (specimens up to 12lb and 8lb respectively have been hooked) and there are also three lakes stocked with coarse fish, consisting of carp, bream, tench, rudd, roach, perch and hybrids.
For the more active, ride-outs are available daily at nearby Abbeyfield Farm, set on 200 acres of Kildare countryside. There are over 40 horses available and routes are decided based on the skill levels of the guests. For novices, lessons are also available. The €65 charge includes the use of clothing and mandatory safety equipment.
For those who want to try something completely different, The K Club offers clay target shooting, with instruction from the expert trappers on how to handle the guns and how to improve shooting ability. This hugely enjoyable and very popular activity costs €90 per session. Rough shoots are available throughout the year at locations around the country. Archery is available for groups and the cost is dependant on the numbers involved.
Finally, one of the oldest of all pursuits – falconry – is available on request for groups and offers an intriguing insight into the intuitive relationship forged between man and bird. Few activities better sum up the philosophy of the K Club, which is to protect and share the heritage of this magnificent estate while offering all the luxuries and comforts the discerning guest expects.
